It has been a while since I’ve seen a movie that has thoroughly and absolutely captured my attention and left me wondering who the protagonist is. Such is the case with Haywire, a recent offering by Steven Soderbergh. Centered around the not original plot of a covert operative being left out in the cold and working (read: fighting) their way back into the fold, the movie was more than a simple spy thriller. Haywire broke the mold and introduced Gina Cerano, a relative unknown in the role supported by such big names as Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, and Antonio Banderas. Though the plot is relative predictable, the action is fascinating especially because it is gritty, precise, and doesn’t suffer from the standard indie-camera shake so popular in modern action flicks. But don’t let that confuse or worry, the action is intense, focused, and powerful.

I was left with a deep and abiding feeling Gina Cerano is set for good things. A great action star, fabulous looks, and more than average acting skills, I would consider myself an instant convert. I recommend picking up a rental from your local vending rental and checking it out. Haywire is thoroughly enjoyable and I rate it a Strong Seven perhaps even a Weak Eight (out of ten).

Been riding my 2012 Suzuki VStrom 650 for just over three weeks now. Great starting bike and my skills are improving after every ride — the gear changes, throttle application and braking proficiency is smoothing out. A good friend recommended I read the book Sport Riding Techniques and I’ve been devouring each chapter. Though I don’t own a sport bike, so to speak, the skills the book dissects are critical and worthwhile.

Case in point, initially I was grabbing at the front brake with a full hand. The first chapter of the book strongly recommended use the index and middle-fingers for brake control. Modern brakes are powerful enough for two-finger application and “grabbing a handful of brake” in an emergency situation will only lead to disaster (front wheel washout). I’ve found this tip to be change from my self-taught methods — and a good one.

The one thing this book stresses, beyond any other technique, is braking. Brake at slow speed, brake at high speed, consistently brake and learn the limits of your own skill and the limits of the bike. As stated in the book, the throttle is the most abused control on two-wheels; however, the brake is much more import. So, based on instruction, I take my bike to a deserted parking lot, get up to 40mph and apply the brakes in a consistent but strong method. I try to decrease the amount of distance needed to fully stop and after a few attempts, engaging both the front and rear brake I start feeling the shudder of ABS through the handlebars — the very reason I sought and purchased the VStrom. Great day of riding while my continual learning curve of the bike continues.

Based on the English TV show of the same name, Shameless hit the Showtime lineup a little over a year ago. I knew nothing about the show but noticed it starred William H. Macey as the protagonist. An excellent character actor in his own right, I checked some online reviews and noticed nothing but praise for the groundbreaking show. Figured I’d take a closer look to see what all the fuss was about.

Sold.

Just that quickly the Gallagher family is another fabulous viewing experience and well worth the time. I have seldom come across a more diverse ensemble cast that one both roots for and against (mostly for) in a long time. From Fiona to Liam, the entire cast offers a unique insight into a family always on the edge of poverty or drama. Consider me a convert and after consuming season one in a matter of a month, I eagerly await the release of season two (which just ended on SHO).

Always wanted a motorbike. Since as long as I can remember, something that has always appealed to me but I’ve held off for this reason or that excuse. But no longer. I researched, considered, pondering and researched some more the various styles of bikes for me.

Harley cruiser? Several of my good friends ride Harleys but that isn’t where I wanted to me. To quote a good friend of mine, “Why pay 2012 prices for 1950′s technology. You’ll overpay like crazy for a Harley.” Noted and agreed to. Plus I’m not keen on the riding position or the associated attitude. Nah.

Sport bike? Never wanted to ride a torture wrack for a bike. Sure you can go fast, very fast with the flick of the wrist but that will only lead to trouble, death and dismemberment because I know me. Additionally the riding position, hunched over the tank with you legs tucked up behind isn’t the ideal setup. Finally, my penis isn’t short enough to justify riding around on a bike named, “Ninja” … uh, no.

So, I was left considering a “standard” bike, upright riding style in the 650cc range. Good starting bike, lots of learning to be done, and I’d be off and running pretty quickly. Once more the research began but after a couple of weeks, the decision was pretty clear: either a Kawasaki Versys or a Suzuki VStrom. After chatting with long-term riders, they all (in unison) preached the benefits of ABS which made the decision for me — the VStrom has ABS as standard while the Versys does not make an ABS version in the states (but they’ve been making them for years in England).

So I just pulled the trigger on the 2012 Suzuki VStrom 650. Though my start was shaky, so far, so good.

Been gone for a while. Where have my Internet footsteps led? Facebook. Yes, that is right. I became enamored by the lure of tracking down old friends (read: girlfriends), to read interesting and fascinating updates about people tending their gardens, or installing toilets, or ranting on about — well lets not kid ourselves, the same stuff I rant on about here. I came, I saw, I ventured. Heck, I even fully immersed myself in the Facebook universe but what did I get for my time, effort and energy? Little to nothing, really.

Truth be told, one thing turned me off. People telling me all the fabulous things they are doing but honestly, going for a hike isn’t that fabulous. At all. Visiting Facebook feels like a middle school popularity contest or beauty school pageant. “Look at me doing this,” or “Look at me doing that.” Topics like: I have new shoes, my toilet is broken, my boss sucks, and I’m single right now are just, um, uninteresting.

I recently read a couple of studies. The first said the more Facebook friends one has, the more shallow one’s actual life. Hrmmmmm. I know some pretty deep people with a friends in the 700 count so I’m unmoved by that study. The second claims the more friends one has, the more solitary their life. Again, find little corollary between those two point of view so I’ve concluded those studies must be sponsored by haters, pure and simple. My reasons for moving on and simple — I’m just not interested.

Don’t get me wrong, I love hearing about an art exhibit or a movie review, perhaps an interesting show coming to town but those nuggets are so rare, it is hard to find them while parsing the crap. So, I’m done. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll keep the account, keep my Real ID version and my gaming version just for grins but as for logging in on a daily basis and seeing what is up? Um, I have better things to do like checking my couch for spare change…

It is rare when the remake of a classic, almost iconic film from the past is superior to the original but that is exactly what we have when comparing the original True Grit to the Coen Brother’s adaptation — a vastly superior film in almost every respect. Based on the book of the same name, True Grit follows the path of a young girl who seeks vengeance upon her father’s murderer. She hires Roster Cogburn to track down the scoundrel; mayhem and chaos ensue.

Well written, expertly directed, and acted with precision, True Grit easily moves into the top-five westerns I’ve ever watched. The plot is enthralling and filled with rich characters fully immersed in the genre. It is a pleasure to watch on the big screen and I can see myself making this a purchase for my permanent collection — an honor rarely bestowed on any recently released films. Furthermore, True Grit shows the acting talents of Jeff Bridges in a role few will be familiar with: a fat, aging law man who is quick to anger but moves with deliberate and mostly deadly intent. Now I see why there is Oscar talk regarding this role.

True Grit is worth paying a premium price for theater viewing because it is an exceptional piece of American film making. Grand vistas, with a gritty storyline, I strongly recommend this film and would rate is a solid to strong 8 out of 10.

I’ve learned that AMC is producing excellent series these days. What with the success of Mad Men followed by my favorite, Breaking Bad, AMC is becoming a powerful entity for creative, cutting-edge talent. The writing, direction, and plot lines are fresh, interesting, and hold my attention for more than a single season. Not easy to do with so many channels to chose from and quite honestly, not even HBO with their massive budget can keep pace. This is what good writing and believable stories do over massive budgets and recognizable names.

AMC has come through again with The Walking Dead. Based upon a comic book series of the same name, The Walking Dead is a post-apocalyptic setting where zombies have taken over and a small band of survivors struggle to avoid becoming dinner for “the walkers” stumbling around. But this series is so much more than a simple zombie flick — truth be told, it rewrites the genre. The typical zombie fare is a steady diet of gruesome deaths lashed with special effects and lots of screaming. The protagonists are typically moving from encounter to encounter and the most we find out about them is how fast (or slow) they are in reacting to the next threat. The Walking Dead goes much further. The series is a character study of people in the worst of circumstances, making tough decisions, while trying to eke out a niche to survive in. The weekly plot lines are compelling and become a high-point on the DVR each Sunday.

The Walking Dead has become a run-away hit and AMC has commissioned another 12 episodes to compliment the first six. I look forward to watching the series unfold and applaud AMC for taking a shot at something completely different … and winning.

Restrepo is a National Geographic docudrama which follows the 15-month deployment of a platoon in the most dangerous posting in the U.S. military — the Korangal Valley, Afghanistan. Known for its relentless assaults and being under fire every day, the outpost’s main goal is to win the hearts and minds of the local populace to generate support for a main highway through the heart of the valley. The highway would link two major populace centers but this film shows much more than simple negotiation with military platitudes.

The heart and soul of this picture is the daily toll placed on these young men as they strive to live in some of the harshest conditions in modern combat. We watch as they are repeatedly ambushed, assaulted, and bullied until the commanding officer has enough. In the dead of night, he orders a small squad of men to create a observation post on the very summit the locals are using as a vantage point for sniper fire. Once established, the story continues with intense combat sequences, the never ending labor to improve fortification, and the camaraderie of soldiers under fire. This picture is a testament to enduring spirit and the sometimes heart-wrenching pain suffered by those in harm’s way. The platoon has just one goal: survive the deployment and return home.

I personally found this picture inspiring, tragic, powerful, and thought-provoking. Because of the distance and gap between the U.S. and the war, one sometimes forgets the real pain these men and women endure. Though this isn’t a multiple viewing kind of film, Restrepo should be watched at least once. Let’s not forget those veterans.

Forgive my absence but I just finished one of the most hectic terms I’ve endured, thus far. However, I’m off for Christmas break (probably longer) and have a little time on my hands. Why not get back to what I love (writing) and update the iPad chatter.

Sure enough, I’ve come to love the iPad. It is without a doubt, a fabulous piece of technology which allows all manner of content viewing. Whether it is checking email, surfing the web (without Flash), watching video, playing music, or employing one of the many apps I’ve purchased, the iPad does it all (mostly). Some of my favorite apps include Craigslist Pro, Flipboard, Flickster, Pulse News, or the Kindle Reading app to name but a few. It really has earned a place of tech honor in the household but not for long. To move forward, sometimes one must sacrifice pawns — or in this case, the rook.

My primary computer system is quite long in the tooth. I’m still running a Core 2 Duo E8500 and though solid, it is unspectacular when compared against the i7 family of processors and the triple channel RAM of today. Time to upgrade. So, for Christmas, I’ve asked Santa (read: family and friends) to chip in for the upgrade. This will give me a solid foundation with which to rebuild my system save one critical, missing component: the graphics card. One should not build a system without a bleeding-edge, pixel-mangling, graphics card. After doing some research, I’ve settled on the Nvidia GTX 580 — the tip of the spear for graphics cards. But these aren’t cheap so how does one generate the requisite cash to buy it? Simple, sell the iPad.

So, I pulled the trigger on the EVGA GTX 580 and have it in the fold. I’m backing up my iPad contents to my iMac and will clean off the device and put it up for sale. One day, in the not-to-distant future, I’ll buy an 3G iPad again; this time with more memory and a couple more accessories. The iPad is here to stay and if you’re looking for a eBook reader or fabulous multimedia device, this is the gadget to own. Did I mention mine is for sale?

I recently sold multiple items on both eBay and Craigslist (like an old graphics card, some unused golf clubs, and a couple of collector edition books). I netted some guilt-free disposable income but had no particular destination for the cash. So, since we’ve had such good luck on Craigslist, I decided to begin nosing around, checking prices on this and that.

Since I’m an Apple apologist, I decided to research an Apple iPad, specifically the 3G variety (which allows Internet connection away from wi-fi hot-spots). The 16GB version (entry level) goes for $629 on the Apple Store but I found one going for $450 on Craigslist. Long story short, I managed to chat the owner down to $350 for a 16GB, 3G model which is only three months old. Sure, it has a couple of minor scratches on the back panel but screen is pristine and the unit is completely functional — for almost half the price! Initially, I was skeptical of the iPad use-case in my own life. I could not see how it would benefit me but after having now for around three weeks, I’m finding it harder and harder to resell. Why? Because its functionality covers a wide variety of uses and it is just darn handy to have around.

Examples of use includes a great Craigslist app which allows fast, easy and organized scanning of local items for sale. It seamlessly syncs with my Dropbox application, allowing access to any file stored in the cloud. There are sketching apps, business productivity apps, star gazing apps, and movie trailer apps. Heck, though I’m not much of a political junkie, I grabbed the ABC Election Results app so I could watch returns in real time on the iPad. I’m even writing this piece on a blue tooth keyboard associated with Writer, an excellent streamlined writing app for the iPad. The longer I keep this thing around, the more I like it. Truth be told, I may sell this only to get the larger version (this the 16GB model, Apple also sells the 32GB [$729] and 64GB [$829] 3G models). However, at the highest price point, one might as well just go for the latest Apple 11″ Macbook Air because that is full blown computer which weighs barely 2.3 pounds.

So, if you have a chance to “rent” an iPad, or even borrow one from a friend (I’ve loaned this out to a college friend a couple of weekends ago), then take one for a test drive. See if this gadget fits your lifestyle. You might be surprised. It won’t replace your computer but it can certainly become a great extension to your mobile computing world.
