Skype

Sure, I’ve heard of Skype. Many magazine have extolled the virties of these excellent voice over ip client. It is free, the quality is excellent and on and on they prattle. Honestly, I was convinced long ago but I’d never actually taken the time to download the client, install the thing and check it out — until today.

skypeFriend of mine (Crapgame) recently purchased Call of Duty: World at War and we were discussing the best way to chat, in-game, while doing some cooperative gaming. The in-game system created by Steam is solid but unspectacular. It is also smitten with disconnect problems, spotty quality, and less than stellar voice settings. However, on a whim, we decided to go with Skype and check out the functionality and quality. Good move.

Crapgame lives on the right coast, myself on the left. Not exactly a world apart in today’s society but far enough to make a difference in VoIP. Sure enough, I download and install the client, bingo we connect easily. So easily, in fact, it was a little creepy. Minutes later, we’re knee deep in WWII combat while chatting quite easily on Skype. The software didn’t cause any problems in-game, and the quality was exceptional. Finally Skype is free. Hmmmmm, my new, favorite voice-chat client. Nicely done, Skype. Why did I wait so long?
